Raf Simons – I-D Magazine Summer 2012

The fashion world has confirmed the Raf Simon’s career change. It looks like he will be shifting from minimalist ensembles to a bed of floral draped couture dress for Christian Dior. Photographed by Willy Vanderperre for one of i-D’s eight covers for its Summer 2012 issue.  I would admit this is the first time I have seen the designer share such energy through the lens. He appears to be an introvert who vents his emotions throughout his collections. His last collection for Jil Sander was gorgeous with pillars of flowers on the runway celebrating a great departure to a new beginning.

Will Raf Simons consider Dior?

Former fashion designer of Dior, John Galliano, virtually commited career suicide for his anti-Semitic remarks to a couple in France. His unforgettable statements has not only lead a viral fashion frenzy, but also a horde of angry/disappointed supporters. This was a extremely difficult decision for Dior to make. However, the behavior exposed in public could not be tolerated which lead to his departure.

Galliano’s departure has led to numerous speculations whose going to replace him at Dior. Some of fashion’s elite such as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang and Riccardo Tisci were a huge topic of discussion. Some of the designer wanted a larger sum of money, and others declined the offer. The speculations were like a soap opera because we all were anxious to see what’s going to happen next. All good gossip starts to come to a close with their final decision. The more likely candidate happens to be no other than Raf Simons.

Raf Simons is one of the premeire innovators in the fashion industry.  He is widely known for his minimalist aesthetic at Jil Sander and his own label, Raf Simons (along with his diffusion line, Raf by Raf Simons). He is a visionary has been quite rebellious because he happens to follow his own lead opposed to being trendy (talk about a risk taker). As we all know, there has been no one to disagree with his approach as his work continues to improve since his arrival at Jil Sander in 2005. Right now, He is still working at Jil Sander, which raises the question how fast are will they seek to finalize the approval to the house of Dior.  With fashion week coming up in a couple months, there are alot of expectations heavily on the line. The shifting from one fashion house to another is exhausting, but I am sure this is going to work out great.

In order for Dior to provide a clean slate, this is exactly what they need! Throughout the years, John Galliano has brought us the noir-theatrical emphasis of the Victorian era designs while Raf Simons delivers a futuristic minimal approach. If you have notice, there are totally different concepts. Talk about out with the old (nostalgia) and in with the win (futuristic).

Dior’s decision with Galliano

Apparently everyone in the fashion world is curious about the result of Galliano’s unfortunate departure from Dior. Dior has announced they will not confirm who the designer will be until the fall.. There are speculations regards to Riccardo Ticcsi of Givenchy will replace Galliano. Personally, They are smart for not letting him back. Its like having Michael Richards make an ultimate comback  while a major TV station advocating him.  Money talks at the end of the day.

Alber Elbaz for Dior???

There has been hella speculation that Lanvin’s designer Alber Elbaz will be leaving them for Parisian fashion house, Dior. With John Galliano out of the picture, this is going to be some talk if this is really confirmed. Ironically once I heard about the speculation about Hedi Slimane and Stefano Pilati, the thought of Lanvin trying to maintain the leash on Elbaz (no pun intended). After all Elbaz has performed remarkable collections (also the viral collaboration for H&M in 2010), which make this label to be one of the best out there!! If he does leave there will be the equivalent to Tom Ford leaving Gucci.

John Galliano Suspected from Dior

I was going through my twitter just recently. There was a significant traffic regards to John Galliano. Comes to find out John Galliano was arrested last night for alleged assaults and anti-semitic insults towards a couple in a Paris Cafe’ . He is not suspended from creative director of Dior, which will not tolerance any kind of behavior as such.

No company or brand would ever want to be stigmatized for any hateful insults regards to race, sex, religion, etc.  This is totally shocking, but what in life isn’t? All of that talent wasted. Lets see how he’s gonna come back on this one.. stay tuned

Whether you love it or not, but Kanye West was indeed the most talked about artist this year! His 2010 comeback proved he is completely relevant and has much to offer in pop culture. How can you not respect someone passionate in their craft when they spend almost 24 hours a day working on their product?

Kanye was featured in I-D magazine. The look was quite modern with garments ranging from Tom Ford, Dior, etc.  I have read many of Kanye’s interviews (practically all of them), but this particular one was by far one of the most humane of them all. In the interview, he discussed his views on fashion, the kind of woman he love to marry, and of course music. One of the questions which was asked was, “On the qualities he looks for in a woman?

”Integrity. I’m a hopeless romantic and I’m looking and trying to decide who the mother of my child will be. It’s not going to be based off a whim of being in love; she has to bring a certain level to the table. I want to be married, I want that super dope counterpart, that one woman, but she has to be super-fresh, super-smart and not overwhelmed, because being with me is gonna be a job (laughs)….The main quality is that you know that this person will ride or die for you. Whether she’s mad at you, whether she’s with you or not, she still loves you, she still bigs you up in any circle. She doesn’t talk down about you to other people. That’s the main thing I need.”

I really loved that statement he has made in regards to finding the perfect woman for him. whenever we want something, whether it is from a relationship or achieving a goal, it must not only enhance the fathoms of our well being, but add comfort in our lives. The worst thing we can do in this world is lie about ourselves or compromise more than what’s needed! Surely we should seek the strive of excellence of an individual; on the contrary, you must exit the building if they not producing the equivalent amount of work.

Here you have a highly successful artist close to mid-30s who has yet to find the perfect woman for him. Honestly this is nothing disturbing; however, the comment ” being with me is like a job” is what flicked a light bulb in my head. Integrity  was the keyword because in order to be able to humane in situations, we must not lose our focus. We have people in our circle who tend to be fairweather friends. Its kinda scary because you often not sure if they are gong to be there for you unconditionally or not. It must be hard to find someone who is genuinely for you when you are when you are successful without ulterior motives.

The job has to relate towards security in a relationship. I can truly vouch on his statement because being a straight black man whose speaks proper, into art, and fashion is often stereotyped is a job in its entirety. Honestly it is very hard for us to find a woman (particularly a black woman) whose sexy with an intellect and a sense of style to equate her physical attributes.

Sometimes it is very hard for us to be understood when we are not the typical quote on quote archetype black man society displays us. Its very easy for us to be ourselves internally, but its difficult to capture that in a methodical world. How does creativity and innovation is formed? We must have to do things from a different approach from the status quo for us to stand out. Unfortunately, some of us are ostrascized. I truly don’t be like sitting at the lunch table at school by yourself, but ostracized mentally.

This is very common in our society because we are so focused on the joneses’ but you must have the mentality, you are the joneses’ (Nene lol). Why is it that we have care so much about what the next person is wearing or doing? If it is not true to yourself, then do what is true to you! Being creative is often called being weird, but is it really? Sometimes being “weird” is what makes people like some of us more in tuned with the world than the AVERAGE person can imagine. Despite everything, we must not lose our self worth for others.

even though i tend to speak upon fashion and martial arts, but this are issue we all find in ourselves pertaining towards our passion, being humane with integrity to the fullest. There are plenty other interesting responses he made, but this was the truest of all.

Homage Haute Couture Friday: Yves St. Laurent

Out of respect, I was best to spell his name out.  In case some people do not know, Yves St. Laurent has opened so any doors in the world of fashion! He was the first fashion designer to have minorities walk down the runways, not to mention the first ready to wear collection as well. Totally commend you for given different breed of people out there a chance which some would have thought as impossible. The man not only created art, but also effortless style.
